Leiden University wins again

Again, students from Leiden University, Faculty of Law, won a moot court competition. The team won the first International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition of the International Committee of the Netherlands Red Cross. On 29 Februari 2008 Pernille Walther, Doriane Lachal and Jessica Maeda represented Leiden University at the one-day-lasting competition last Friday. The team was coached by Helen Hamzei and Daniëlla Dam de Jong, both PhD candidates at the department of Public International Law. The Leiden team had to compete with 5 other Dutch Universities (Free University, UvA, Maastricht, Radboud and the University of Utrecht) at the Juliana Barracks in The Hague - the legal capital of the world.

This moot court competition aims to 'take law out of the books', by using simulations, role plays and moot courts to allow the jury of the IHL competition to evaluate the teams’ theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of IHL. The jury consisted of eminent scholars and judges, namely professor Kalshoven, Judge Orie and Judge Keith. From next year onwards the competition will be titled ‘The Frits Kalshoven Competition of International Humanitarian Law’ in honor of the Leiden emeritus Frits Kalshoven.

The Leiden team did not only demonstrate that they are brilliant jurists who know how to apply International Humanitarian Law to extremely difficult case scenarios, but they also convinced the international jury that they are excellent speakers working together with an outstanding team spirit!

Early Februari won an other team of Leidse students also a price: National Round of the Philip Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
