Stricter implementation of fines system

The Leiden University Libraries will apply the fines system stricter with effect from 1 October 2009.

No doubt you get annoyed if another person keeps the materials that you like to borrow too long or, even worse, looses them. The libraries are now applying the fines system stricter than before in order to stimulate that materials are returned as soon as possible, so that they become available to others.
The fines system
A loan period is three weeks. After three weeks the following applies:
  • Week 1: 1st reminder. No fine yet, renewal possible for the maximum period of  six months as long as the material is not reserved by someone else.
  • Week 2: 2nd reminder. No fine yet, card is blocked, renewal via the circulation desk.
  • Week 3: 3rd reminder. € 5 fine per book, card is blocked, all books must be returned.
  • Week 4: 4th reminder. Final warning by mail.
  • Week 6: 5th reminder. The claim is handed to a debt-collecting agency. Your card remains blocked until all costs are paid. You will have to pay the fine (€ 5 per book), administration fees (€ 12,50 per book), collection fees and replacement fees for the book.
Please note
Employees and students of Leiden University will receive reminders on their uMail-address. If you prefer to receive them on another e-mail address you can change the settings in your U-account to have your e-mails automatically forwarded to a preferred e-mail address.
