Borrowing rules
In order to borrow books from the library, you need to be in possession of a library or student card.
- Library or student card

- Students can use their student card as a library card.
Other users can get a library card.
On presentation of valid identification (passport, driving licence) and proof of residence in the Netherlands, a library card can be obtained at the information desk.
- The card is for free if you can identity yourself as one of the following:
- a student or a staff member at a university in The Netherlands: Universiteit Leiden, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, TU Delft, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Den Haag, TU Eindhoven, RU Groningen, Open Universiteit Heerlen, Universiteit Maastricht, KU Nijmegen, EU Rotterdam, Universiteit van Tilburg, TU Twente, Universiteit Utrecht, Wageningen Universiteit
- a former teacher of Universiteit Leiden, an NWO staff member, a member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde or the Vereniging Dante Alighieri, a staff member of a Leiden museum, a LUMC staff member or a foreign invitee of Universiteit Leiden.
- All others pay € 20.00 yearly.
- In case of loss
- If you loose your library pass, please inform us immediately. We will then block your card. An additional € 2.00 is charged for a new card.
- How many books?
- You can borrow a maximum of 5 books.
- What not?
- But you cannot borrow books with a red dot, loose leafs, journals and books published before 1850.
- How long?
- The loan period is 2 weeks.
- Renewal
- Renewal is possible (unless the book has a hold) through the library catalogue (U-CAT) (My U-CAT), by phone or mail (bibliotheekrechten@law.leidenuniv.nl).
- Place a hold
- If a book is already on loan to someone, you can place a hold on it through the library catalogue (U-CAT). When the book is returned, the Law Library will inform you.
