Paul Nieuwbeerta (1964) studied (science of) public administration at the University of Twente. He continued his education with a first grade teacher training at the Universiteit Twente (Social studies and Ecnomics). After this he did his doctoral research at the Sociology Department of the Radboud University in Nijmegen. In 1995 he defended with succes his doctoral thesis The Democratic Class Struggle in Twenty-five Countries, 1945 - 1990, a research into class-bounded voting behaviour at parlementary elections in 25 countries. 
From 1995 until 2000 he was a researcher and lecturer at the Sociology Department of Utrecht University. In 1998 he was appointed as a fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Science (Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen - KNAW). From 2000 until 2009 he was working as a senior researcher at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (Nederlands Studiecentrum Criminaliteit en Rechtshandhaving - NSCR).  
Since 2006 he has worked one day a week as Professor of Criminology at the Sociology Department of Utrecht University, where he his teaching commitment was: theoretical and emprical analysis of the effects of criminal interventions.
In July 2009 2009 he was appointed Professor of Criminoloy at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology of Leiden University.  

Paul Nieuwsbeerta is a member of several scientific committees. Besides that he is a member of the editorial staff of Homicide Studies and of the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, and he is a reviewer in several Dutch and international scientific magazines.

With regard to research Nieuwbeerta is interested in criminal behaviour concerning the course of life, murder and manslaughter, and the effects of emprisonment. His researchgroup, consisting of a some Phd-students and senior researchers, is concerned with studying intentional and unintentional consequences of emprisonment. This research is an important part of the researchprogramme Criminal Justice:Legitimacy, Accountability, and Effectivity of the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology of Leiden University.
