- Dr. C.(Carel) E. Smith, LL.M., is coordinator of the Graduate School of Legal Studies. In close collaboration with the Head of PhD Studies, Dr. Kees Waaldijk, and under the responsibility of the Dean, Professor Dr W.J.M. Voermans, he is in charge of the organisation and realisation of the Talent Programme. He obtained his doctorate in 1998 based on a study of the significance of facts for the interpretation of the rule of law (Feit and rechtsnorm). He is also affiliated to the Department of Metajuridica. Among other things he teaches the Interpretation of the Rule of Law in Theory and Practice (first year of bachelor’s degree) and Legal Methodology (Master’s Degree in the Encyclopaedia and Philosophy of Law). In his research he is concerned with subjects such as the interpretation of the rule of law, jurisprudential argumentation, law and culture and the philosophy of science.
