A programmatic straitjacket?

It is the case that individual researchers have focused their research in the direction of one of the programmes, and experience has shown that it is possible to achieve more with mutual cooperation than was previously the case.
There is pressure in terms of two other aspects.  The Faculty PhD candidates start within one of the programmes, and not outside the programmes as was initially the case.  This change reflects the wishes of PhD candidates themselves, who indicated that they were unhappy with this exceptional position. It is particularly stimulating for PhD candidates to work within a programme because of the mutual support available within such an environment.
A second form of pressure can be found in the correlation of research capacity with the performance attained, as will become apparent hereafter.  This correlation is part of the Faculty quality system whereby greater attention is paid to periodic assessments of the research achievements. The Faculty fully supports such a system given the scarcity of the resources and the fact that they are provided by public funding.  The Faculty currently focuses greater attention on human resource management.  A pre-condition for such HRM policy is an effective system of quality monitoring.
