D.A.J. Suurland is writing a PhD Thesis on the applicability of the totalitarian paradigm on historical and modern day radical Islamic movements. Its aim is to answer three basic questions:
- Can radical Islamic movements and their corresponding political ontology be understoood in terms of totalitarian legal and political philosophy?
- What should be the consequences for the West and the Islamic world if the totalitarian comparisson proves to be correct?
- Is this presumed totalitarian component indigenous to Islam or is it a product of modernity?
