20 June | Roundtable ‘What future for data retention?’
On 8 April, the European Court of Justice delivered its landmark judgment in cases C-293/12 and C-594/12, annulling the Data Retention Directive.
The ruling clearly affirmed: blanket retention of telecoms data for law enforcement use cannot take place in the EU legal order. The Directive in the present form is out, but what is the future of data retention at the European level? What will be the implications for data retention in the Netherlands? The Europa Institute of Leiden Law School warmly invites you to the next Leiden Law Exchange meeting, focusing on these questions.
The meeting will take place in the ‘Rechtenkamer’, Academy Building (Rapenburg 73) on Friday 20 June from 14:00 to 16:00 hours. Registration and coffee start at 13:30 hours.
Mr Hielke Hijmans (European Data Protection Supervisor) and Professor Gerrit-Jan Zwenne (Leiden University; Bird&Bird, The Hague) will act as keynote speakers. Presentations will be followed by discussion with the audience. Dr. Marga Groothuis (Leiden University) will be acting as chairperson throughout the meeting.
The event will be concluded with a reception at the Faculty Club of Leiden University.
