Claartje van Dam studied Law and Political Science. She received both bachelor degrees, as well as a Master’s degree in Constitutional and Administrative Law cum laude from Leiden University. In 2012 she studied at the College of Europe, where she completed the Master in European Political and Administrative studies. During her studies Claartje studied at Sciences Po in Paris. She also participated in the organisation of the VeerStichting symposium as a  member of the student board in the year 2009.

In September 2013 Claartje started as a PhD-candidate at Leiden University. Her research deals with EU administrative soft law, documents that seek to provide guidance to the Member States on the interpretation and the application of EU law. Her research explores to what extent EU administrative soft law is taken into account by the national courts, the national administration and the national legislator. The purpose of the research is to identify the binding effects of administrative soft law on the Member States and to evaluate the legitimacy and effectiveness of governance through EU administrative soft law.
