Mark Klaassen is an assistant-professor at the Institute for Immigration Law. He studied Liberal Arts and Sciences at Roosevelt Academy, Political Science at Warwick University and European Law at Leiden University. Both for his Bachelor and LLM degrees he obtained a cum laude distinction. After his studies, he worked for a year as a policy advisor for the Dutch Advisory Committee on Migration Affairs. The topic of his PhD dissertation, which is supervised by Prof. Peter Rodrigues, is the existence of a right to family unification. Through a comparative analysis of international law, European law and the domestic law of four member states it is examined whether a human right to family unification exists and what it consists of. Klaassen will publicly defend his dissertation on 3 November 2015. Besides his research Klaassen currently is the coordinator of the Bachelor-courses ‘European Migration Law’ and ‘Immigratierecht’, and lecturer in the Master-courses ‘Kind & Migratie’ en ‘Child & Migration’.
