Upcoming Activities of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies

Below follows an overview of the activities of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies in May/June 2009. Most of these activities listed below are open to everyone and free of charge. Supranational Criminal Law Lecture Series
  • May 20: Dr. Ton Zwaan, Researcher Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies on “Genocide, justice, and the problem of impunity”
  • May 26: Mr. Joseph Kamara, Deputy Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone on “Preserving the legacy of the Special Court for Sierra Leone:  Challenges and Lessons learned in Prosecuting Grave Crimes in Sierra Leone.”
  • June 3: David Donat Cattin, Programme Director PGA on “11 years after the Adoption of the Rome Statute: Limits in the practise of States on Cooperation with the Court and Remedies available through the enactment of National Implementing Legislation”.
  • June 10: Professor Errol Mendes, International and Human Rights Law at the University of Ottawa on “Immunities of State Officials under the ICC Statute”
The Hague International Network Meeting
  • June 4: The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies facilitates a network meeting for expats working for companies, international organisations and embassies, as well as Dutch citizens who live or work in The Hague area and have contact with expats. Dr. Carsten Stahn, Programme Director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies (Campus The Hague, Leiden University) will deliever the keynote speech on “Where the World Seeks Justice - Insights into the practice of Hague International Courts and Tribunals.”  
International Conference on Fighting Impunity and Promoting International Justice
  • June 8: the International Conference on Fighting Impunity and Promoting International Justice will take place in the Peace Palace. This conference will provide the opportunity for members of civil society, NGO’s, government officials and experts to meet and discuss the Chicago Principles on Post-Conflict Justice as well as provide recommendations for the future implementation of post-conflict justice modalities. 
Hague Intersessional Experts' Meeting in cooperation with Crimes Against Humanity Initiative
  • June 11-12: Several international instruments contain a definition of the crime against humanity, but no two are alike. The aim of the Intersessional Expert Meeting on June 11 and 12 is to discuss the results of the April Expert Meeting and discuss implementation and enforcement issues of a Convention on Crimes Against Humanity and its interplay with the Rome Statute. The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies (Campus The Hague, Leiden University) facilitates the meeting.
Book launch
  • June 17: Book launch of “The Criminal Responsibility of Senior Political and Military Leaders as Principals to International Crimes”, a book written by Professor Hector Olasolo Alonso (University of Utrecht and International Criminal Court) The book will be introduced by ICC Judges Sir Adrian Fulford and Ekaterina Trendafilova and the author, in the presence Richard Hart, Managing Director Hart Publishing, Oxford, UK. 
Colloquium on Sexual Violence as International Crime: interdisciplinary approaches to evidence
  • June 16-18: This Interdisciplinary Colloquium from 16 to 18 June will focus on innovations and challenges of empirical and other information gathering techniques to build evidence for the prosecution of cases of sexual violence.
Bilingual Summer School
  •  June 22-July 3: This two-week intensive course from June 22 till July 3 aims at providing an insight into the core topics of international criminal law, and is intended for students who want to deepen their knowledge in international criminal law in a brief period of time.
Marie Curie Top Summer School
  • June 29- July 10: This course from June 29 till July 10 is intended for excellent young researchers and will cover all main topics of the supranational penal system on three distinctive areas: substantive criminal law, procedural law as well as matters of legal policy.
